A recent study has revealed that women who regularly wear high heels may have more uniformly slender legs compared to those who prefer flat shoes. This surprising finding has sparked interest in the relationship between footwear and leg shape.
In the study, half of the participants were habitual flat shoe wearers. Researchers observed that wearing flat or low-heeled shoes can cause an imbalance in muscle activity, leading to overuse of the medial calf muscles. These findings were published in the Royal Society Newsletter, adding credibility to the research.
Professor Anna Ahn from Harvey Mudd College in Claremont, USA, explained: “It’s similar to pushing a door near the hinge. When you wear flat or short-heeled shoes, your muscles are closer to the ankle joint, and your ankles have to work harder to lift your body. The greater the stretching force, the more strain is placed on the inner leg muscles.â€
As a result, these muscles can become thicker and more developed over time. To ensure the accuracy of their results, the researchers focused on 10 sedentary individuals—five men and five women—to eliminate the influence of regular exercise.
During the experiment, the team measured the electrical activity of pelvic muscles at different foot angles. When the foot was angled 15° off the ground—equivalent to stepping on a 2.75-inch heel—the pelvic muscles showed 15% less electrical activity than usual.
The study concluded that women who wear high heels tend to have more relaxed foot muscles, improved foot strength, and better ability to flex their feet. While the benefits of high heels might be appealing, it's important to consider long-term effects on posture and muscle balance.
