In the first half of 2010, the printing and dyeing industry in China remained a key player in the global textile market. The major import provinces and cities for printed and dyed fabrics included Guangdong, Shandong, Jiangsu, Shanghai, and Zhejiang. Together, these regions accounted for 83.50% of the total import value, with Guangdong alone contributing 32.02%. Despite this, the import volume in individual cities was significantly lower than that of Guangdong. When it came to average unit prices, Shanghai, Jiangsu, and Zhejiang saw prices above $2 per meter, while Guangdong and Shandong had more affordable rates, just over $1 per meter.
Economic performance during January to May showed strong growth. Enterprises above the designated size achieved a total profit of 3.869 billion yuan, reflecting a year-on-year increase of 51.54%. Although the growth rate slowed slightly compared to January-February, it remained robust. The sales margin reached 3.75%, up from 2.77% in the earlier period. Meanwhile, loss-making enterprises experienced a reduction in losses by 24.69% year-on-year, with the decline rate accelerating by 24.27 percentage points.
The industry continued to grow steadily, with production increasing by 16.07% during the first five months. Industrial output and sales output grew by 20.69% and 20.61%, respectively. Main business income rose by 22.11%, and export delivery value increased by 12.70%. Profit growth reached 51.54%, showing strong momentum. Export volumes and values also saw significant increases, rising by 15.32% and 22.92%, respectively. The average export price increased by 6.59%, signaling a positive recovery in exports.
However, the growth rate declined slightly from January to February due to factors like the fading impact of stock-rebuilding in Europe and the U.S. Despite this, the industry maintained a relatively high growth level, with most economic indicators returning to pre-crisis levels.
Exports of printed and dyed fabrics continued their recovery trend. In the first five months, export volume grew by 12.19%, 44.04%, 17.51%, 14.44%, and 15.32% respectively, while the value of exports increased by 9.49%, 44.56%, 20.37%, 19.38%, and 22.92%. The average export price also showed a monthly upward trend, reaching 6.59% year-on-year growth in May.
Traditional markets such as the U.S., Japan, and the EU saw a rebound in demand. Exports to the U.S. and Japan exceeded the overall export growth by 17.71% and 14.5%, respectively. While the EU's growth was slightly below the average, the increase was largely driven by restocking rather than new demand. In contrast, exports to emerging markets like ASEAN, India, and Africa did not show strong growth, except for Russia. The launch of the China-ASEAN Free Trade Area did not lead to a significant boost in exports to the region.
This surge in exports was partly due to global economic recovery and increased external demand. Additionally, Chinese export stimulus policies played a supportive role. Importers also placed orders in advance, anticipating currency appreciation, which further contributed to the growth in exports.
