Worse still, some garments marked as cotton are made entirely of synthetic fibers. This misleading practice isn’t limited to small street shops—it has even been found in branded stores. Under normal conditions, genuine cotton clothing feels soft, comfortable, and elastic, without a slippery texture. To check the authenticity, you can take a small piece of fabric and burn it with a lighter. Pure cotton will turn into gray ash with no smoke or odor. If the fabric contains synthetic blends, it may produce black smoke, drip, emit a burning smell, or not burn at all. Consumers are advised to be cautious and verify the fabric content before purchasing, especially when dealing with items labeled as “cotton.” Always look for reliable certifications and consider conducting a simple burn test to ensure what you’re buying is truly what it claims to be.
