Why Heels Are Tips for Leg Slenderness
A recent study has revealed that women who regularly wear high heels tend to have more evenly shaped and slender legs compared to those who prefer flat shoes. The findings suggest that the way we walk in different types of footwear can actually influence muscle development and leg appearance.
In the study, half of the participants were accustomed to wearing flat shoes. Researchers found that walking in flat or low-heeled shoes can cause an imbalance in muscle use, leading to overexertion of the inner calf muscles. These results were published in the Royal Society Newsletter, highlighting the surprising connection between footwear and body mechanics.
Professor Anna Ahn from Harvey Mudd College in Claremont, USA, explained: “When you wear flat shoes, your ankle is closer to the ground, which means your foot has to push harder to lift itself. This creates more tension in the muscles near the ankle, causing the inner leg muscles to become stronger and more defined over time.â€
To ensure accurate results, the researchers focused on 10 sedentary individuals—five men and five women—to eliminate the influence of regular exercise. During the experiment, they measured the electrical activity of pelvic muscles at various foot angles. When the foot was angled 15 degrees from the ground, similar to wearing a 2.75-inch heel, the pelvic muscles showed 15% less electrical activity than usual.
The study concluded that high heels may help relax foot muscles while increasing overall foot strength and the ability to flex the toes. This could explain why many women find their legs appear slimmer when wearing heels, as the muscles are engaged differently than in flat shoes.
