In the first half of 2010, the printing and dyeing industry in China saw significant activity in the import of fabrics. The major importing provinces and cities included Guangdong, Shandong, Jiangsu, Shanghai, and Zhejiang, which together accounted for 83.50% of the total import value. Among these, Guangdong alone contributed 32.02%, highlighting its dominant role in the sector. In contrast, the import volume in other cities was much lower. When analyzing the average unit price of imported fabrics, Shanghai, Jiangsu, and Zhejiang had prices above $2 per meter, while Guangdong and Shandong maintained lower prices, slightly above $1 per meter.
Looking at the economic performance, from January to May, large-scale printing and dyeing enterprises achieved a total profit of 3.869 billion yuan, marking a 51.54% year-on-year increase. However, this growth rate showed a slight decline compared to the earlier months. The sales margin stood at 3.75%, up by 0.98 percentage points from January to February and 0.81 percentage points higher than the previous year. Meanwhile, the loss rate among enterprises decreased by 5.95 percentage points from January to February, with the total loss of unprofitable companies dropping by 24.69% year-on-year.
The industry continued to show steady and rapid growth, with production increasing by 16.07% during the first five months. Industrial output value and sales output rose by 20.69% and 20.61%, respectively, while main business income grew by 22.11%. Export delivery value increased by 12.70%, and profit growth reached 51.54%, indicating strong performance across key indicators.
Although the growth rate slowed slightly from January to February due to factors like reduced stock-repair effects in Europe and the U.S., it remained relatively high. Major economic indicators had largely recovered to pre-crisis levels. Exports also continued to rise, with cumulative export volume growing by 15.32% and export value by 22.92% in the first five months. The average export unit price increased by 6.59%, showing a positive trend.
Traditional markets such as the U.S., Japan, and the EU experienced a recovery in demand, with exports to these regions seeing significant growth. However, this recovery was largely driven by restocking rather than a surge in demand. On the other hand, exports to emerging markets like ASEAN, India, and Africa did not grow as strongly, with most of them below the average export growth rate. This suggests that market demand in developing countries had not fully recovered from the financial crisis.
Several factors contributed to the sharp increase in exports, including global economic recovery, improved external demand, and government stimulus policies. Additionally, the expectation of currency appreciation led foreign importers to place orders in advance, further boosting export growth.
