We’ve finally made it to the last day of the Cappuccino Dress + Tunic sew-along! Today, we’ll be putting the finishing touches on our project. It’s such an exciting moment because we’re almost there. Let’s dive in!
---
**Preparing/Attaching the Sleeves**
For View B, start by sewing a basting stitch about 5/8†from the bottom edge of the sleeve. This will act as your guide when creating the hem. Fold the raw edge of the sleeve to meet this basting line on the wrong side, then fold it again to enclose the raw edge and form a narrow hem. Unfold it after pressing so that you can easily finish the hem later.
On the other hand, if you’re working with View A, pin the sleeves to the dress with the right sides together, ensuring that the notches and edges match perfectly. Sew the sleeves using a 1/2†seam, making sure to lockstitch or backstitch at both ends. Once you’ve stitched the seam, trim and finish it according to your preference and press the seam allowances toward the sleeve.
---
**Sewing the Side Seams**
Now, let’s tackle the side seams. Pin the front and back pieces of the dress or tunic together at the side seams and underarm areas, right sides facing each other. Ensure that the raw edges, notches, and hemlines are aligned. Don’t forget to unfold the sleeve hem for View B before joining the side seams and sleeves into one continuous 1/2†seam.
After sewing the side seams, carefully clip the seam allowances at the underarm curves without cutting through the stitches. Next, press the seam allowances either open or towards the back, depending on your preference, and finish them using your chosen method.
---
**Attaching the Sleeve Band (View A)**
For View A, fold the sleeve bands in half lengthwise, right sides together, and press a crease down the center. Sew a basting stitch 3/8†from the bottom, un-notched edge of the sleeve band. Fold the fabric along this basting line towards the wrong side.
Next, unfold the short edges of the sleeve band and pin the ends together, right sides facing each other. Sew these ends with a 1/2†seam, remembering to backstitch or lockstitch at both ends. Press the seam allowances open afterward.
Pin the long notched edges of the sleeve band to the raw edge of the sleeve, right sides together, and ensure the seams and notches align. Stitch the band in place with a 1/2†seam, backstitching or lockstitching at each end. Trim the seam allowance to 1/4†and press the sleeve band and remaining seam allowances away from the sleeve. Repeat this process for the second sleeve.
Fold the band along the center crease and pin the folded edge over the previous stitching line, starting from the right side of the sleeve. Edge stitch along this pinned area to secure the sleeve band in place.
---
**Finishing the Dress/Tunic**
To hem the dress or tunic, sew a basting stitch about 5/8†from the garment’s bottom raw edge. This will serve as the fold line for your hem. Fold the raw edge to meet this basting line on the wrong side, then fold it again to enclose the raw edge completely. Edge stitch the innermost fold to create a neat, narrow hem.
And there you have it! You’ve completed your Cappuccino Dress or Tunic. Congratulations on finishing this project! If you’d like, feel free to share pictures of your finished piece in the Liesl + Co Flickr group—we’d love to see your work.
