knit romper

I recently came across a fantastic idea from Brittney who’s been experimenting with different sewing patterns. She previously visited us wearing her iconic Fox Playtime dress and Rapunzel Fairy Tale dress. This time around, she took inspiration from the Oliver + S collection, blending elements from their School Bus T-shirt and Tea Party Playsuit to craft this adorable knit romper. I couldn’t help but wonder why I hadn’t thought of something similar! Here’s her step-by-step guide—enjoy! Today, I’ll walk you through combining the School Bus T-shirt and Tea Party Playsuit patterns to create a unique knit romper. The same method can be applied when working with the Field Trip Raglan pattern. Let’s get started! --- First, decide whether you want a looser or more fitted design. For a baggier fit, stick with the same size for both patterns. For a snugger look, opt for a smaller size for the Playsuit and match it to your child’s measurements for the T-shirt. In my case, I used the 18-month size for both patterns since that fits my little one perfectly. Now, let’s jump straight into it! --- Begin by preparing your pattern pieces. Here, I’m using the front pieces of an 18-month School Bus T-shirt and an 18-month Tea Party Playsuit. Align the outer edge of the Tea Party Playsuit bodice and shorts, overlapping where they meet by about half an inch. Next, I prefer taping the two pieces together before tracing them onto freezer paper. Place the School Bus pattern roughly a quarter-inch away from the center front of the Tea Party, ensuring alignment between the bottom of the armholes. Trace carefully, focusing only on the necessary portions of the School Bus pattern. Once traced, connect the neckline with the Playsuit’s bodice and the bottom of the armhole with the hem of the Playsuit. To account for the leg binding, draw a line 1.5 inches above the hem of the shorts—no extra hemming is needed here. Your final front pattern piece should now resemble this design. Repeat the process to create the back pattern piece. --- Cut out two front pieces, two back pieces, and use the original School Bus sleeve and neckband pieces. You’ll also need two leg binding pieces and three snap placket pieces, which I’ll detail further along. --- With right sides together, sew or serge the center front and center back pieces using a ¼-inch seam allowance. Next, do the same for the shoulder seams. Then, attach the sleeves and sew the side seams. To measure for the leg binding, open one leg and measure its length. Create a pattern piece that’s 2 inches wide and slightly shorter than the leg measurement (subtracting 2 inches). For instance, if my 18-month leg measures 18 inches, my pattern piece would be 2 inches wide and 16 inches long. For the snap plackets, open the crotch area and measure its length. Design a pattern piece that’s 1 inch wide by the measured length. Cut three such pieces. Iron interfacing onto the wrong side of one piece, then sew it together with another non-interfaced piece, right sides facing each other. Flip the resulting snap placket right side out, press it flat, and sew the third non-interfaced piece to the back of the romper, turning it inward. Attach the sewn snap placket to the front of the romper, then sew the short ends of the leg binding together and turn it right side out. Stretch the binding slightly as you pin and sew it to the right side of the romper leg. Fold it down and press. Finally, follow the School Bus T-shirt instructions to sew the neckband. Hem the sleeves and add three snaps to the snap plackets—metal snaps from the Oliver + S website work beautifully, and their blog offers a great tutorial. And there you have it—a completed knit romper! --- This project was such a fun way to mix and match patterns while staying creative. Whether you’re a seasoned sewer or new to garment making, this combination offers endless possibilities. If you give it a try, share your results—I’d love to see what you come up with!
