I'm absolutely thrilled to finally share with you my latest Lisette pattern, Lisette B6661, designed for Butterick. It's been quite the journey bringing this pattern to life—there were so many decisions to make along the way, and I wanted to ensure it turned out just right. Let me give you a peek into its creation and why it took some time to perfect.
When I began brainstorming this sundress, I kept coming back to the idea of criss-crossed straps and experimenting with striped princess seams. Princess seams are fantastic for achieving a tailored fit, but they also create a chevron effect when using striped fabric, which adds a unique flair to the design. However, designing a sundress like this posed some challenges, particularly for those of us who prefer to wear bras.
Back in high school, I had a sundress similar to this one, but my mom insisted I wear a shirt underneath because the sides were too revealing. Now, if she saw me in this dress, she'd probably still suggest layering up! This design, though, strikes a balance—it looks breezy and free-spirited while still providing modesty. The open back is surprisingly discreet, giving the illusion of freedom without sacrificing comfort or confidence.
A couple of summers ago, during a trip to Barcelona, my friends and I got chatting about sundresses while strolling through the city. I shared my vision for this style and my concerns about finding suitable support. We talked about incorporating a shelf bra into the design, and after weighing the pros and cons, we decided it could work beautifully.
Now, a shelf bra might not seem like enough support, especially for fuller busts, but hear me out. The wide straps gradually broaden as they extend toward the sides, offering surprising coverage. Plus, you can always enhance the support by adding cup inserts, similar to what you’d do with swimwear. During a recent meeting at the Butterick office to finalize the details, we discussed everything from fabric choices to styling tips. With both the wide straps and the supportive shelf bra, I believe you'll feel secure and truly carefree in this dress.
The skirt comes in two lengths, so you have options right out of the envelope, but you can always adjust it further to suit your preferences. I envision this sundress looking stunning in both solid colors and bold prints. As soon as my pattern arrives, I plan to try it out in some salmon-colored linen. Of course, I've got a few other projects lined up first, and it’ll likely take a while to clear customs anyway.
If you're looking for inspiration, consider sewing this dress in an oversized gingham print or a delicate floral. A solid color would also look amazing, and eyelet fabric could add a touch of elegance. Stripes are another fantastic option—just imagine how they'd pop against the criss-crossed straps!
While working on this pattern, I gathered plenty of visual references. Take a look at some of these early inspirations:
