Brittney has previously visited with her Fox Playtime dress and Rapunzel Fairy Tale dress. Recently, she decided to blend two Oliver + S patterns to create this charming knit romper. Why didn’t I think of that? Here's her step-by-step tutorial. Enjoy!
Today, I’m going to walk you through how to combine the School Bus T-shirt and the Tea Party Playsuit patterns to make a knit romper. This method works equally well with the Field Trip Raglan, and you’ll use the same approach to create the pattern pieces.
Â
Â
First, decide whether you want a looser or a more fitted look. For a looser fit, use the same size for both the Playsuit and the Tee. For a slimmer fit, use a size smaller for the Playsuit and the appropriate size for the Tee based on your child’s measurements. For instance, I used the 18-month size for both my pattern pieces since that’s what my son measures into.
Let’s get started, shall we?
Begin by preparing your pattern pieces. Here, I have an 18-month School Bus and an 18-month Tea Party (both front pieces). Align the outer edge of the Tea Party Playsuit bodice and shorts, overlapping where the bodice and shorts meet by 1/2 inch.
Â
Â
I prefer taping the two pieces together and then tracing them onto freezer paper. Place your School Bus pattern about 1/4 inch from the center front of the Tea Party, aligning the two points at the bottom of the armhole.
Â
Â
Trace the pattern pieces, focusing only on tracing a small portion of the School Bus.
Â
Â
I’ve used black to highlight the final shape. Connect the neckline with the front of the Playsuit and the bottom of the armhole to the hem of the Playsuit. Draw a line 1 1/2 inches from the hem of the shorts, as there will be a binding on the legs, so no additional hemming is necessary.
Â
Â
This is what your final front pattern piece should look like. Follow the same steps to create the back pattern piece.
Â
Â
Cut out two fronts, two backs. Use the existing School Bus sleeve and neckband pattern pieces. You’ll also need two pieces for leg binding and three snap plackets, but I’ll explain how to measure those later.
Â
Â
With right sides together, sew or serge the center front and center back with a 1/4-inch seam allowance.
Â
Â
With right sides together, sew the shoulder seams.
Â
Â
With right sides together, sew the sleeves.
Â
Â
With right sides together, sew the side seams.
Â
Â
To measure for the leg binding, open one leg and measure its length. Create a pattern piece that’s 2 inches wide by the leg measurement minus 2 inches. For example, my 18-month-old leg measured 18 inches, so my pattern piece is 2 inches by 16 inches.
Â
Â
For the snap plackets, open the crotch and measure the length. Create a pattern piece that’s 1 inch wide by the measurement.
Â
Â
Cut out three of these. Iron interfacing onto the wrong side of one of the snap plackets. Sew the interfaced snap placket and one non-interfaced snap placket with right sides together.
Â
Â
Turn the snap placket right side out and press.
Â
Â
Sew the last non-interfaced snap placket piece to the back of the romper with right sides together, turn it to the inside of the romper, and press.
Â
Â
Sew the sewn snap placket to the front of the romper.
Â
Â
With right sides together, sew the short ends of the leg binding. Turn it right side out and press.
Â
Â
Slightly stretching the binding, pin and sew it to the right side of the romper leg.
Â
Â
Turn the binding down and press.
Â
Â
Sew the neckband according to the School Bus Tee instructions.
Â
Â
Hem the sleeves and attach three snaps to the snap plackets. I absolutely love the metal snaps available through the Oliver + S website, and there’s an excellent tutorial on their blog for using them.
And you’re done!
