I’m absolutely thrilled to finally unveil my latest Lisette creation, Lisette B6661 for Butterick! This project has been on my mind for quite some time now. I wanted to ensure that I approached its development thoughtfully and in a way that would truly resonate with those who love fashion as much as I do. Let me walk you through what inspired this design and why it took so long to perfect.
For years, I’ve been captivated by the charm of sundresses—especially ones featuring criss-crossing straps and playful stripe patterns incorporated into princess seams. Princess seams are not just functional; they’re a fantastic way to achieve a tailored fit while also creating a chevron-like effect when using striped fabric. It’s an elegant detail that adds both structure and flair to the design. However, designing a sundress like this comes with its own set of challenges, particularly for those who prefer or need to wear a bra.
Back in high school, I owned a sundress similar to this one, but my mom insisted I wear a shirt underneath because the sides were too revealing. Fast forward to today, and S would probably be the one reminding me to do the same! Yet, this dress strikes a perfect balance—it looks effortlessly breezy without compromising modesty. The open back might seem daring at first glance, but it actually offers plenty of coverage, leaving you free from worries about showing more than intended.
A couple of summers ago, during a visit to friends in Barcelona, we stumbled upon a lively conversation about sundresses while strolling through the city. I shared my vision for this particular style and expressed my concerns regarding the lack of bra support. After brainstorming solutions, we decided that incorporating a shelf bra could provide the necessary confidence boost without detracting from the dress's aesthetic appeal.
Now, you might assume that a shelf bra alone wouldn’t offer sufficient support, especially for fuller busts. Allow me to explain why this approach works beautifully. For starters, the straps widen as they reach the sides, providing additional coverage and stability. Moreover, just like swimwear, you can easily add cup liners to enhance support further. During a recent meeting at the Butterick offices to finalize the design, we discussed these options extensively. With the combination of wide straps and a supportive shelf bra, you'll find yourself feeling surprisingly secure and truly at ease in this sundress.
The skirt portion of the dress is available in two lengths, making it versatile right out of the box. Of course, you can always adjust the hemline according to personal preference, but having pre-set options saves time and effort. I envision this sundress looking stunning in both solid colors and bold prints. Personally, I’ve already picked up some salmon-colored linen fabric, eagerly awaiting my pattern arrival. But before I dive into sewing this piece, there are still several projects on my to-do list, and getting the fabric through customs will take its time.
If you're seeking inspiration for your version of this sundress, consider experimenting with oversized gingham patterns or delicate florals. A solid color option could also create a striking look! Eyelet fabrics, such as broderie anglaise, bring a touch of elegance, while bold stripes add a modern twist.
