my favorite oliver + s pattern: elizabeth from lizzieville

Here's the next chapter in the "My Favorite Oliver + S Pattern" series. Today, we’re joined by Elizabeth, who has graciously stopped by to share her thoughts on her go-to Oliver + S pattern. Thank you so much for taking the time to chat with us, Elizabeth! --- Hi everyone! My name is Elizabeth, and I used to blog over at lizzieville until life got a bit too busy last year—work commitments and my ever-moving kids made it tough to keep up. But today, I’m thrilled to talk about my absolute favorite Oliver + S pattern. I learned how to sew from my mom and grandma when I was younger, and it was pure excitement when I stumbled across Oliver + S patterns back in 2011. I ordered the Bubble Dress pattern and made my one-year-old daughter a sweet little dress. It wasn’t perfect—the back pieces didn’t quite align with the buttons—but I was still incredibly proud to have created something handmade for my child. [Image description: A photo of a handmade Bubble Dress] That initial success led me to sew around 20 Oliver + S patterns, with a few more waiting their turn. I’ve also dabbled in many of the projects from the *Little Things to Sew* book. As I reflected on my favorites, I almost went with the Sunday Brunch Jacket, which has such beautiful bias-bound finishes. [Image description: Photos of a Sunday Brunch Jacket] I also considered the countless Library Dresses I've made for my daughter using knit fabrics. She adores them all! [Image description: A photo of a Library Dress] However, after much deliberation, I decided to share my current favorite pattern: the Art Museum Trousers for my son. I absolutely adore these trousers, and in the past year alone, I’ve made four pairs! They fit him perfectly, giving me plenty of room to play with different fabrics and customizations. My first pair came together in 2015 for Christmas. The welt pockets turned out to be easier than expected, and I was thrilled with the clean finish they provided. [Image description: Photos of the Art Museum Trousers with welt pockets] The next pair was in corduroy. Since the original pattern fit beautifully, I only made minor tweaks, like adding extra topstitching to reinforce the seams. The waistband lining is an excellent spot to feature a fun fabric, as I did here. [Image description: Photos of corduroy trousers with waistband details] My son affectionately calls these his “hedgehog pants,” and they’ve seen endless wear. Even though they're starting to get snug and show signs of wear, we absolutely love them, and it’ll be hard to part with them when the time comes. This past winter, I made two new pairs in the next size up. For one pair, I swapped out the welt pockets for the ones from the Sandbox Pants pattern and added a ribbed knit waistband to match some of my son’s favorite store-bought pants. These modifications made the sewing process significantly faster than the original pattern. [Image description: Photos of new corduroy trousers with ribbed waistbands] The latest pair I made was inspired by a perfect pair crafted by Gail from Probably Actually. As soon as I saw her post, I bought some Kaufman railroad stripe fabric. Three years later, I finally got around to making them. For this version, I tried out the tutorial for installing a zip fly. [Image description: Photos of the final pair with a zip fly] Reflecting on this pattern, I realized it embodies the two things I love most about sewing: learning new techniques and tweaking patterns to mimic my kids’ favorite styles. The Art Museum Trousers are fantastic as-is, but they’re also a fantastic foundation for customization. Plus, the accompanying vest is adorable—my son wore it during Christmas, and then he flipped it inside out for spring! [Image description: Photos of the Art Museum Vest] Thank you so much for letting me share my passion for Oliver + S patterns! I can’t wait to dive into even more projects and maybe make a few more pairs of these beloved trousers. --- Thanks for reading, and happy sewing!
